Hostel Review: Ocean Island Inn Backpackers Suites
Finding affordable accommodation in Victoria isn’t always easy, so I was curious to see what Ocean Island Inn Backpackers Suites had to offer. At less than half the price of other options, and with more inclusions, I was excited to give it a try. Here’s how my experience went.
Location
Ideally located near Victoria’s main street, Ocean Island Inn puts everything you need within easy reach. Whether you feel like stretching your legs on a walk or hopping on a bus, getting around the city is simple and convenient.
Rooms
Ocean Island Inn has a room for every type of traveller. Budget-conscious guests can snag a dorm bed, while those seeking a bit more privacy can choose a single room. Couples have the option of a double or queen room, with some even featuring an ensuite if you’d rather not share a bathroom. Families or groups can book a dedicated group/family room, and for those looking for a touch of extra comfort without breaking the bank, the garden suites are a great option – complete with a full kitchen, bathroom, work/study area, and a TV.
Our Room - Small Queen Room
We chose the small queen room for a comfortable stay without compromising on privacy or space. Our room was on the fourth (top) floor – no elevator, unfortunately – but it was the perfect spot to store our belongings in the wardrobe and stretch out in the main area. Airflow was good with the window open or the fan running, and the room stayed warm enough at night. The shared bathroom was just across the hall, with four additional bathrooms on the same level available for use.
Full disclosure: there’s no soundproofing in the rooms. If you’re sensitive to noise, this might not be the place for you – you’ll hear everything from hallway chatter and sirens to late-night mishaps in the bathrooms. It’s definitely part of the classic hostel experience!

Facilities
One thing that really sets Ocean Island Inn apart from other hotels and hostels is the inclusions. They offer free breakfast and dinner daily, plus one free beer, wine, or soda per day, and 24-hour coffee and hot chocolate! While a few places provide breakfast, it’s rare to find one that also serves dinner.
The front desk is open 24 hours, and free Wi-Fi is available throughout the building. There’s a cozy movie/chill-out room that can be reserved, as well as a shared common room and kitchen. Other amenities include baggage and bike storage, laundry facilities, paid parking, and 24-hour snacks and drinks from the vending machines – everything you need for a comfortable and convenient stay.
Final Thoughts
Overall, Ocean Island Inn has everything you could need for a budget stay in Victoria. Of course, there are some downsides – like hearing every little noise from the hallway and carrying luggage up three flights of stairs – but with a price point like this, a few compromises are to be expected.
Personally, given the affordability and the generous inclusions, it was absolutely worth the occasional lack of sleep!
