A Beginners Guide to Surfing in Tofino

The best beaches, where to rent gear, and who to take surf lessons with – it can be overwhelming to figure it all out, especially if your time is limited! This guide is here to simplify everything and keep all the key information in one place.

Best Beaches

Tofino may be a small town, but it has plenty of beaches to explore. Some are perfect for beginners, others are better suited for rough weather, and a few aren’t ideal for surfing at all.

Choosing the right beach for your skill level can make all the difference between a great surf session and a frustrating one.

Chesterman Beach

Chesterman Beach is a top choice for surfers of all levels – and especially great for beginners. Most surf schools operate out of North Chesterman, where the waves are beginner-friendly and the sandy beach breaks make learning easy. Depending on where you surf along the beach, there are consistent Pacific swells suitable for all skill levels, making Chesterman one of Tofino’s most popular surf spots.

Cox Bay

Cox Bay is the sweet spot between Chesterman and Long Beach, a year-round surf destination known for its consistent waves. It’s suitable for all levels – beginners will find the middle of the bay ideal, with waves around 1–3 m at almost any tide or season. More advanced surfers can head to spots like The Corner or Lando’s for bigger, more powerful waves.

Long Beach

Just 15 minutes from Tofino, Long Beach stretches 16 km of golden sand and ocean. Famous for its surf, scenery, and tide pools, it’s perfect for surfing, beach walks, and storm watching. While still suitable for all levels, Long Beach tends to attract more advanced surfers or those with the means to reach its more remote spots. With so much beach to explore, it’s also a great option if you’re looking for a quieter place to surf.

Want to stay steps from the waves? Pacific Sands Beach Resort sits right on Cox Bay Beach - and even has its own surf rental shop on site, so you can hit the water anytime!

Surf Lessons

Some of the top surf schools in Tofino – and the ones I personally recommend – are Pacific Surf School, Swell, and Surf Sisters. All three primarily operate out of North Chesterman Beach, though they’ll confirm the exact location each day to match the surf conditions and your skill level.

Each company provides full gear, including a board, wetsuit, and booties, plus hi-vis vests that make it easy to spot your group in the water.

Beginner lessons always start on the sand, covering the basics of paddling, your pop-up, and water safety – including what to watch out for while surfing.

If it’s your first time on a board, taking a lesson is the best way to start. You’ll have a professional guiding you, teaching you the essentials for safe and enjoyable surfing.

Hiring Gear

If you don’t need a lesson but want to rent surf gear, Swell Tofino is my top recommendation. They’re just a 10-minute walk from Chesterman Beach – perfect if you’re biking or walking – and their rates are very reasonable.

If you have a vehicle, you’ll have even more options, including Pacific Surf School or Surf Sisters, both of which have rental bases in central Tofino.

Surfing in Tofino can feel overwhelming at first, but with the right beaches, gear, and lessons, it’s easier than you might think. Start at a beginner-friendly spot like Chesterman, consider a lesson to get the basics down, and don’t be afraid to explore other beaches as your confidence grows. With consistent waves, beautiful scenery, and plenty of options for all skill levels, Tofino is the perfect place to catch your first wave – or your next one. Grab your board, get out there, and enjoy the ride!
