Must-Try Local Eats in Tofino

Want to eat like a local in the coastal town of Tofino? You won’t find any McDonalds or Starbucks here, but what you will find are authentic and locally operated businesses serving up more than just a meal. From wood fired pizzas and hearty burgers to fresh caught seafood or crunchy tacos, Tofino’s food scene is as vibrant as it’s landscapes.

So grab your knife and fork – here are my top 5 must-try local eats.

1. Shed

A staple in town with a buzzing atmosphere, Shed is my go-to for a casual, delicious meal. Whether you’re after burgers, bowls, snacks, or something sweet, there’s something on the menu for everyone.

On sunny days, their cute outdoor patio is perfect. When it’s wet (as it often is!), the spacious indoor area makes for a cozy spot to dig in.

Our pick: I’m obsessed with their barbacoa tacos – they’re juicy and bursting with flavour. My partner always goes for the classic SHED burger. Pair either with a local cider or craft brew and you’re golden.

What I love even more? Shed sources its ingredients from local farms and waters, including sustainably raised meats from Vancouver Island. So your meal supports more than just one local business.

2. Tacofino

You’ve probably heard of Tacofino – the original orange food truck that kicked off a west coast food movement. Now with multiple locations across Canada, the OG truck is still parked behind the Live to Surf lot, just a short walk from Chesterman and Mackenzie Beach.

They’re known for bold flavours and epic combos, serving up tacos, burritos, and gringas from their iconic window.

Our pick: The chicken gringa is my go-to, while my partner swears by the krispy chicken tacos.

Pro tip: This place is popular, so expect a lineup – especially in summer. They often close early due to high volume, so try to arrive at least an hour before the posted closing time.

Combine with a dessert from Chocolate Tofino!

3. Surfside Grill

Tucked inside the Pacific Sands Beach Resort, Surfside Grill is a lesser-known gem serving some of the freshest seafood around. With a commercial fisherman as one of the owners, you can count on top-tier quality straight from the ocean.

Their menu features fish & chips, burgers, and fish tacos – and while we both loved the beef burger, we’re already planning our return to try more.

Bonus: They’re one of the only spots in town with a late-night happy hour! From 9-10 PM, you’ll find $5 tacos, fries, and beers, plus $15 special features. Budget-friendly and flavour-packed? Yes, please.

4. Browns Socialhouse

Located within the Best Western Tin Wis Resort, Browns Socialhouse serves up those comfort classics you can always count on. Think neighbourhood pub vibes, but with just enough polish to feel like a night out. It’s one of my go-to spots in Tofino for a casual meal and an easy drink.

Mondays are especially fun with all-day Happy Hour during their open mic night, while the rest of the week still offers solid pricing and a welcoming atmosphere.

Our pick: The Old Faithful Pizza (don’t skip the aioli dip to level up). Pair it with a peach bellini for me, and a couple of crisp, budget-friendly IPAs for him.

5. Basic Goodness Pizzeria

Don’t let the name fool you – Basic Goodness Pizzeria is anything but basic. This family-run spot specializes in Neapolitan-style wood-fired pizza, made by an owner trained in Naples itself.

Expect perfect crust, unique toppings, and flavourful dips. You’ll smell the goodness before you even walk in.

Our pick: The meat lovers pizza with their creamy garlic dip – gone in minutes!
