Review: The Edgewater Resort & Spa, Rarotonga

The Edgewater Resort & Spa is one of the most popular places to stay in the Cook Islands, and after spending some time there, I can see why. With its wide range of accommodation, beachfront setting, and affordable price tag, it really does have something for everyone. For us, it was the perfect mix of comfort and convenience – a place to relax after days filled with island adventures.

Location

The Edgewater is located on the west coast of Rarotonga, also known as the “sunset side” of the island. It’s only a 7-minute drive from the airport, so you don’t lose precious holiday time in transit. The resort has its own private beach, which is nicely sheltered from the winds, making the lagoon perfect for swimming and snorkeling even when the weather isn’t at its best.

We also loved how easy it was to get around. There’s a bus stop right outside the property if you’re not hiring a car, and for late-night meals, the island-famous Spaghetti House sits right at the front of the resort.

Rooms

The Edgewater offers plenty of choice, with around 280 rooms across nine categories. You’ll find everything from Garden View Rooms and Studios to Beachfront Rooms and even 3-Bedroom Villas. Families can book interconnecting rooms, while couples often go for the more private suites. Each accommodation block is named after one of the Cook Islands, with local artwork giving it an authentic touch.

Some of the larger villas sell out quickly, so it’s worth booking early if you’re traveling with a big group.

Our Room – Beachfront Deluxe Suite

We stayed in a Beachfront Deluxe Suite, which is especially popular with couples and honeymooners. It came with a queen and single bed, a spa bath with separate shower, and a private balcony that opened directly to the ocean – just steps from the sand.

Like all the rooms, it had air conditioning, which felt heavenly after being out in the island heat. We also loved that our stay included a daily tropical breakfast. Fresh fruit, pastries, and local dishes each morning meant we could fuel up before heading out without needing to plan breakfast elsewhere.

Facilities

One thing that stood out about The Edgewater was just how many facilities are packed into the property. At the front, you’ve got Spaghetti House Restaurant, Polynesian Rentals if you want a scooter or car, and a tour desk to organize activities.

Inside the resort itself is the spa, the main Brasserie Restaurant, and Mal’s Bar, which overlooks the pool – perfect for sunset cocktails. The resort also has a kids’ club, daily cultural and activity programs, and free snorkeling gear. We didn’t need it, but I noticed they even cater for weddings with a gorgeous beachfront setup.

Final Thoughts

Overall, we really enjoyed our stay at The Edgewater Resort & Spa. Even with some rainy weather, it was easy to imagine spending every day lounging on the beach, cocktail in hand. It’s not the fanciest resort on the island, but it balances value, location, and amenities so well that it’s easy to see why it’s such a popular choice.

I’d happily recommend The Edgewater to families, couples, or groups looking for a welcoming base in Rarotonga. It’s the kind of place where you can do as much or as little as you like – relaxing by the beach one day and heading out on adventures the next – all while knowing you’ve got a comfortable place to come home to.
