Hidden just beyond the surf-friendly shores of Chesterman Beach lies a secret spot that only reveals itself when the tide slips away—Rosie Bay’s magical sea caves. Chesterman Beach itself is an ocean lover’s paradise, perfect for surfing, tide pool exploring, and long sandy walks. Tucked off the beaten path, it’s a spot I couldn’t keep to myself—I’m here to help you find it too.

Start at the South Chesterman Beach entrance and walk left along the sand. You’ll soon reach a rocky outcropping marking the beach’s edge. Carefully make your way around the rocks (only if the tide is low!), and you’ll arrive at the next bay—Rosie Bay Beach. Nestled here is a secluded cove framed by ancient basalt sea caves.

Sea caves are formed over thousands of years from the ocean waves powering over rocks every day. Over time the waves find the weakness in the rocks, like a crack, and the power of the waves widens and deepens the opening as the rocks begin to fall away, inevitably creating a structure which finally forms into the caves we see today.

In Rosie Bay there are a variety of sea caves for you to explore. One is more like a tunnel, a thin passageway with mussels flanking the sea walls on either side of you. Another is more of a cave, with a wide entrance and a deep echoing interior – perfect if you’re wanting to try out those vocal chords!

NEED A PLACE TO STAY IN TOFINO?

Try Beach Break Lodge, only a 5 to 10 minute walk to the sea cave entrance!

As this bay is completely submerged at high tide, it’s the perfect spot for sea life to hide out, so when the water recedes a pool of tiny treasures is revealed. Starfish, anemones, crabs, and more – it’s like a natural aquarium. Just remember: look, don’t touch. Let’s leave these delicate creatures undisturbed so they can thrive.

The most important thing to be aware of is the tide timetable and to plan your visit accordingly. These sea caves can only be explored during low tide, the tide can turn quickly and you don’t want to be stuck there when the waves start lapping on shore again!

Rosie Bay is a reminder of how magical – and powerful – the ocean can be. Plan wisely, tread lightly, and enjoy every step of this hidden gem

Happy exploring!
