Taylor River Rest Area - Vancouver Islands Vibrant Swimming Hole

The two-hour drive between Port Alberni and Tofino can feel daunting, with winding roads through dense rainforest and few places to rest. About 35 minutes in, though, you’ll find the perfect stop—the Taylor River Rest Area.
Location
The Taylor River Rest Area is about 30 minutes from Port Alberni along Highway 4, or roughly 1 hour 15 minutes from Tofino. Keep Google Maps handy, as the pull-off can be easy to miss.
Watch for a small gravel parking area on the right-hand side when driving west from Port Alberni (or on your left if you’re heading east from Tofino/Ucluelet). The rest area sits right along the river, so if you catch a glimpse of turquoise water through the trees, you’re in the right spot

Facilities
This is one of the best rest areas I’ve come across – plenty of parking (including space for RVs), public washrooms, picnic tables, Wi-Fi, and even EV chargers. While the facilities themselves are fairly standard, it’s what waits just beyond the riverbank that makes this stop unforgettable. Take a look for yourself, and you’ll see why everyone pulls over here.
Taylor River
With crystal-clear turquoise water, lush forest surroundings, and even a rope swing, the Taylor River Rest Area is far more than just a bathroom stop. A short walk down the riverbank reveals a hidden oasis – perfect for a refreshing dip.
The water can feel cool at first, but trust me, it’s warmer than what you’ll find along the West Coast.

Activities
While most people stop in for a quick dip, the Taylor River is also a great spot for stand-up paddleboarding. You’ll even find a tree with a rope swing if you’re after a more adventurous way to hit the water. Or, keep it simple – relax on the rocks or enjoy a picnic at the tables above the river.
Taylor River Rest Area may be a quick stop on the map, but it’s one of those places that makes the journey across Vancouver Island unforgettable. Whether you pause for the views, dip your toes in the turquoise water, or enjoy a riverside picnic, it’s a spot worth savoring.
And if you’re looking to stretch the adventure even further, this is one of my favourite tours if your final destination is Tofino!
